Why Do Silicone Products Aave a Peculiar Smell?

When some friends buy new silicone products, they may ask about the smell on the silicone products.

You may be curious about why the peculiar smell is produced.

With the growth of people’s quality of life and increasing demand, silicone products have also become popular in China, and are gradually accepted by everyone. Silicone products are widely used.

If you are a mother, it is not difficult to find that pacifiers for babies are generally made of silicone.

There are also silicone mobile phone cases we hold in our hands, professional prostheses used in medicine, and separation columns used to separate various organic substances in laboratories.

Now silicone plays a very important role in our production and life.

Liquid silicone is environmentally friendly and non-toxic without any odor until it is cured.

But when making silicone utensils, it is time to add masterbatch ingredients and vulcanizing agents, and then form them at high temperature through hydraulic presses or injection machines.

In this process, a little smell will be produced, which is a normal situation. After two or three days under natural ventilation, the smell will disappear naturally, and the quality of the silicone product will not be affected.

But if the smell of silicone products is unusually pungent, you need to pay attention. It may be that the manufacturer of silicone products has used unqualified silicone raw materials or vulcanizing agents.

Silicone is a safe and non-toxic material, but we should try to choose some big brands when buying, so that there is also a guarantee.

If the purchased silicone products have a strong odor, we can try the following methods to eliminate the odor:

1. Boiling method

That is, boil it in boiling water for 10-30 minutes, take it out and dry it, and it is mostly used in those silicone products that are resistant to water but not high temperature;

2. Baking method

That is, directly bake at 200°C for 10 to 30 minutes, and finally clean and wipe with a clean damp cloth, and dry it;

For silica gel without peculiar smell, we still recommend to use the above method to operate it once before use, which is safer.

In addition, some silicone materials are thinner and softer. The manufacturer may just suggest scalding them with hot water, then try to scald them several times to promote the volatilization of residues.

If you have a high-temperature steam sterilizer at home, you can also try it.

Some people will use UV sterilization to disinfect silicone products. However, it should be noted that when using ultraviolet rays to sterilize, excessive ultraviolet radiation will cause the aging of silica gel and shorten the life of silica gel products.
